Clan History

The Koga Clan is the second strongest clan under the Sanjuro Banner, second only to the Sanjuro's themselves, and has a long running hatred with the Iga Clan. Their beginnings can be traced to near the end of the last era. While the town of Kōka was under the jurisdiction of the Rokkaku Clan, who have since been absorbed by the Koga. It was a kind of autonomous municipality composed of peasant unions, then called sō (惣). All important decisions in the municipality were made by a majority vote from the union representatives, this kind of system was uncommon for the period in question.

Sasaki Rokkaku of Ōmi Province in the Land of Earth, using the castle of Kannonji as a base, started to steadily build up military might. He made light of commands from the Earth Daimyo, and eventually began to ignore his ruler altogether. In 1387, General Ashikaga Yoshihisa brought with him an army to stamp out this rebellion, and a battle between Ashikaga and Rokkaku’s camps ensued. Ashikaga mobilized armies from several provinces in the castle of Kannonji, the headquarters of the Rokkaku; as a result, Rokkaku Masayori and Rokkaku Takayori (Masayori's son) were forced to flee to the castle of Kōka.

Ashikaga then moved his base to Anshiyoji of Kurita District and attacked the castle of Kōka. Kōka fell, but the Rokkaku duo escaped and ordered the Koga warriors who followed them to mount a heavy resistance against Ashikaga using guerrilla warfare. Exploiting their geographical advantage in the mountains, the Koga warriors launched a wide range of surprise attacks against Ashikaga’s forces, and tormented them by using fire and smoke on Ashikaga’s camp during the night. The guerilla warfare prevented a final showdown, until Ashikaga died in battle in 1389, ending the three-year conflict and sparing the lives of the Rokkaku duo.

The elusive and effective guerilla warfare used by the Koga warriors became well-known throughout the whole country. This also marked the first time that the ninja of the Koga were drafted as a regular army by their lord. Previously, they were only mercenaries and it was not uncommon to have warriors from Koga on both sides of a battle.

Despite this success however, the years following this conflict were not kind to the Koga. In spite of their new found reputation, the various lords in the Land of Earth continued to turn to other shinobi families for their dirty work. This led to a lack of necessary funds and resources to rebuild following their long campaign, and as a result the men and women of the Koga slowly began to succumb to disease and hunger. Eventually things became bad enough that the Koga were forced to consider dissolving, hoping to instead merge themselves with the more powerful Iga Clan in order to preserve their way of life. To that end, the head of the Koga went to the Iga and proposed an arranged marriage, tying his only son and heir to the Iga chieftain's daughter Ogen, much to the anger of his fellow ninja. In order to prevent this union and eradicate the Iga, a group of Koga ninja went behind their leader's back and joined forces with the Oda, in order to invade Iga. The Koga exploited this opportunity by hiding in the woods and killing any Iga trying to escape from the Oda's bloody attack. It was during this that they met the two betrothed youths trying to escape and explained the events to them, leading to the end of the relationship once and for all. Some time later a small group was sent by the Koga headman as a peace envoy, hoping to ease the tension between the clans. The entire group was assassinated by the Iga in revenge for their part in the Oda's invasion. All was not lost however, as their part in the attack had finally earned the Koga the distinction they needed in order to attract the eyes of the nobility and start working in the shadows once again.

Years later the former betrothed, now the heads of their respective clans, brought their heirs to discuss an arranged marriage between the two, hoping once again to achieve true peace. The pair were introduced again at a meeting in Iga when they were adults, where they both decided to go ahead with the marriage. While seemingly more accepting than the Iga, the Koga were still slightly opposed to the wedding. Once again fate intervened however, this time in the form of a bloody coup within the Iga family. The new leadership was staunchly against any attempts at peace, and sent his top assassins to end the summit once and for all. The resulting bloodbath forever drove a wedge between the two clans, and forced the Koga Clan into exile in the Land of Wind, where they would stay until they could work their way back up the ladder of power.

During the civil war that nearly destroyed the Kaze no Kuni shinobi families, the Koga were an invaluable asset in helping the Sanjuro regain control of the situation and drive out the Ishida. As a result they displaced the Yamada Clan as the second most influential family in the Land of Wind, and became the second in command of the Sanjuro forces.

Clan Abilities
Classification: Kekki Genkai
Kekkei Genkai/Hijutsu: Shōkiton :: Miasma Release
Description:
Members of the Koga Clan are gifted with the Miasma Release, an advanced chakra nature utilized by simultaneously activating both the Wind and Yang Chakra Natures. Ailments are thought to be transmitted through "miasma", a toxic gas or a bad air in general. Miasma Release deals with the utilization of toxic air and gases to subdue an opponent and overcome their nerves and senses. Adding the life-energy of Yang Release to Wind stimulates the growth of pathogens in the air, thus creating toxic gases.

Abilities Summary:

  • Koga Clan members posses the Miasma-Element Advanced Chakra Nature for free at any rank.

    • They must also posses the required Basic Natures: Yang and Wind.
    • These combined natures take up a total of three (3) chakra nature slots.

  • Koga Clan members gain access to the Jutsu listed below, following all rank restrictions that apply.
